We all do it. It impacts everyone one of us in some way or another.

Comparing ourselves to others is a habit that tends to lower our self-esteem and make us feel like the life we are living is imperfect or incomplete. It can make us feel insecure, unhappy and angry with our lives and because we are constantly exposed to unrealistic media expectations, ‘picture perfect’ social media influencers and so much more, it makes it even harder to break this habit.

Comparing ourselves to others ultimately ruins our happiness and our quality of life. This post is dedicated to those getting caught in the spider webs of comparison and can’t seem to find a way to escape. Here are some tips to break this habit:

1) Recognize when it is happening.

Have you ever gotten so caught up on social media that you are now on your college friend’s boyfriend’s cousin’s sister’s friend’s profile viewing photos of their vacation back in 2016. I have. There is no shame in recognizing when you are comparing yourself to others. It is not new to anyone. Avoid what triggers your comparison spiral and take a break from social media.

2) Focus on the good.

Being exposed to other people’s picture-book lives makes it hard to relish the divine things in our own lives. So what if Carol lives in a magazine-perfect house, Sylvia wears the cutest maternity clothes, and Andrea has a body that is could be featured on a cover of Inside Fitness Magazine?! Make sure to take the time to count your own blessings. There are so many things to be thankful for and you won’t be able to appreciate them if you spend all of your time obsessing over Carol, Sylvia and Andrea’s make-believe lives.

3) Embrace what makes you YOU.

Focus on your strengths and embrace your imperfections. These are the things that make you YOU. Take the time to appreciate your strengths and learn to accept your imperfections as they are what make you unique.

4) Be thankful for your journey.

Everyone has their own timeline. Your life has its own clock and you need to trust its timing. Every second that clock ticks you are a second closer to the person you are aiming to become. Take time to value the journey you are on. Reflect on your past and where you have come from. Appreciate all of your accomplishments and milestones. Your journey is never ending. Have trust in it.

5) IF YOU HAVE TO COMPARE, COMPARE YOURSELF TO WHO YOU WERE YESTERDAY.

Make comparison an inspiration by comparing yourself to who you were yesterday. Take the time to learn from your decisions, mistakes and accomplishments. Reflect on your life in a way that can help you grow. What can you change about your life? What do you need to work on to become a better version of yourself?

Comparing ourselves to others can lead us down a bumpy road. It can take away valuable time from our lives, and can bring on negative energy. Life is short. Get off of that comparison train and switch directions. Focus on creating your life and less on the lives of others. Be too immersed in watering your grass to notice if your neighbour’s is greener.
