Confidence is not something that you are born with. It is something… *correction, it is a feeling that flourishes over time. It is a feeling that is developed by the means of environments and experiences.
Did you ever think that I was once a person who was too shy and afraid to order my own meal? I was one who would have rather spent my lunch alone in the halls of high school instead of putting myself out there to make new friends for fear of getting rejected. But guess what? Gradually things started to shift. My perspectives started to change. I was faced with situations that forced me out of that suppressed bubble that I had kept myself in for so long. All of this contributed to a more confident me! This does not mean that I walk down the street thinking that I am better than everyone else because really?! Why should I?! I am just a small town girl… LIVING IN A LONELY WORLDDDD! Seriously though, I am just a small town girl trying to become the best version of myself. How do I do that?! It begins with confidence.
Confidence is developed like any other skill, and oftentimes it takes practice. Here are some tips to rocking your confidence:
Face Your Fears
When I was in my first year of high school I didn’t have many friends. It wasn’t because I couldn’t make friends. It was simply because I was too scared to put myself out there and talk to new people. It wasn’t until my second year when I decided to try out for the competitive cheerleading team. There were many elements of this sport that scared me such as being thrown in the air and relying on other people to catch me, but what scared me the most was getting past tryouts. What if I completely flunked the dance routine? What if I fell and hurt myself? What if I made an absolute fool of myself? I had to get past these fears because if not I wouldn’t have become one of the main flyers on the team. I wouldn’t have made an entire group of new friends. I would have still been stuck in that little bubble of mine without knowing just how fun it was to be a part of a team. I did completely flunk the dance routine during my tryout by the way.
Oftentimes when faced with a fearful situation we walk away. We would rather miss out on an opportunity than take a risk. But what happens when you face that fear head on and overcome it? Your confidence will soar and you will grow past those fears. You will push yourself out of your comfort zone and more opportunities will come your way.
Dress to Impress… Yourself!
Have you ever heard the saying, “don’t dress for the job you have, dress for the job you want?” This also pertains to yourself. You need to dress to feel better. This doesn’t mean that you can’t feel confident rocking that cozy hoody and sweat pants. But, how do you feel when you put on your favourite dress and that killer pump? How do you feel going into an interview wearing jeans and that chiffon blouse versus that black pencil skirt and that polished blazer? Think about it. If you want to become more confident you must dress the part.
Care for Yourself
I can’t stress how important this is. It is not selfish to put yourself first. Make your well-being a priority. Turn off your phone, escape with your favourite book, enjoy a nature walk, go to the gym, cook a healthy meal – do whatever you need to do to nourish your body and mind. When you take care of yourself you will become happier, healthier and more confident!
Keep a Positive Energy
When faced with negative situations we oftentimes take it to heart even when the situation does not directly reflect who we are. When these situations arise it is crucial to maintain a positive view of ourselves. Practicing positive affirmations daily can really help improve your self-image and help you get past those tough situations. Take time each day to practice positive self talk. Affirm yourself of all of the amazing things that make you the person you are today and the person you aim to become. More importantly write them down and review them every morning before your day begins.
Set Realistic Goals and Crush Them
What are some of your short-term and long-term goals? Do you want to buy a house, own a Range Rover, plan a vacation, become a published author, or learn a new skill or hobby? Write your goals down, make a plan as to how you are going to achieve them, read them daily and make that plan your new handbook. Being able to check things off of your list of goals will not only boost your confidence but will also help you to build the life you have always dreamed of.
Like any skill, you can perfect it and still experience setbacks. I am definitely not the most confident person at times and have experienced days of doubt and insecurity. What is most important is learning to not dwell on these moments and to move forward. It is learning to recognize just how amazing you are and understand how incredibly capable you are. It is about learning to appreciate every single step you have taken to become the person you are today. It is learning to inhale confidence and exhale all of the doubt and insecurity that is preventing you from achieving your greatest self.
